How Ohio Sales Tax Works
Ohio levies a 5.75% state sales tax. Each of Ohio's 88 counties adds an additional rate ranging from 0.75% to 2.25%. Combined rates range from 6.5% to 8% statewide. Ohio does not have city-level sales taxes — only the county rate is added. Ohio uses destination-based sourcing.
Ohio Sales Tax Rates by County — 2026
Cuyahoga County (Cleveland, Parma, Lorain) has the highest county tax at 2.25% for 8% combined. Franklin County (Columbus, Dublin) and Montgomery County (Dayton) each charge 1.75% for 7.5%. Hamilton County (Cincinnati) charges 1.25% for 7%. Summit County (Akron) charges 1% for 6.75%. Stark County (Canton) charges the minimum 0.75% for 6.5%.
Ohio Sales Tax Exemptions
Ohio's main exemptions: unprepared grocery food, prescription drugs, certain medical equipment, manufacturing machinery used in production, and agricultural exemptions. Restaurant food, prepared meals, candy, and alcohol are taxable.
Ohio Use Tax and Online Purchases
Ohio residents owe use tax on purchases made out of state when Ohio tax was not collected. The use tax rate equals the buyer's county combined rate. Marketplace facilitators must collect Ohio sales tax on all Ohio-destined sales since January 2019.
