How Florida Sales Tax Works
Florida charges a 6% statewide sales tax on most retail goods. Each of Florida's 67 counties may impose a discretionary sales surtax of up to 1.5% for local purposes. The result: Florida buyers pay between 6% and 7.5% depending on their county. Florida does not have city-level sales taxes — only state and county rates apply. Florida uses destination-based sourcing.

Florida Sales Tax Exemptions
Florida exempts most grocery food items, prescription medicines, and certain medical equipment. Florida also holds regular tax-free shopping holidays each year covering clothing, school supplies, disaster preparedness items, and sometimes energy-efficient products.
Florida Tourism and Sales Tax
Florida is a top tourist state and sales tax applies to virtually all retail purchases by visitors — theme parks, restaurants, and shopping all carry the county rate. Accommodation is subject to sales tax plus additional tourist development taxes. Foreign visitors do not receive VAT-style refunds.
